The central Dalmatian island of Korčula stretches parallel to the nearby mainland in the west-east direction. It is 46.8 km long, with an average width of 5.3 to 7.8 km, covers an area of ​​270 km2 and is the sixth largest island in the Adriatic Sea. It is separated from the Pelješac peninsula by the Pelješac Channel, the shortest distance between them being 1270 m. The island of Korčula is well indented with a series of bays and coves. The climate on the island is very mild, Mediterranean in character. Average temperatures are relatively high: the annual average is 16.8 degrees C, in the coldest month of January it is 9.1 degrees C, and in the warmest month of July it is 26.9 degrees C. The island abounds in natural beauties of special appeal, worth visiting and getting to know. Near the town of Korčula is an archipelago of about twenty uninhabited islets covered with dense macchia and accessible coastlines: on some of them there are smooth stone slabs by the sea suitable for sunbathing. This typical old vineyard settlement with about 600 inhabitants, 25 km away from Korčula by road, is located along the main island road. It was built on the southern slope of a hill at the foot of which lies a large, fertile field with vineyards. A special type of grape, Pošip, is grown here. There is also a wine cellar in the village where the famous wine of the same name is produced. In the center of the village, along the road, stands the parish church of St. Peter from the 15th century, rebuilt several times, and its bell tower was rebuilt in the 1980s.
A large cypress tree, several centuries old, grows on the small paved square in front of the church. On the main altar of the church is the painting Christ Showing Himself to the Disciples, a work by the prominent Venetian Renaissance painter Jacopo Bassano from the end of the 16th century. As in other settlements on the island, here in the nearby sea bay of Zavalatica, the summer residences of Korčula landowners and nobles were fortified. In the field in the middle of the vineyards is the local old and new cemetery with the votive church of Our Lady of Čarsko Polje from the 14th century, which took its current form in the Baroque. On its altar is a relief with scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. These late Gothic alabaster reliefs of English origin, the Nottingham workshop from the 15th century, according to tradition, were washed up by the sea in the nearby Čavića Luka bay, and there is a legend about their miraculous arrival in Čara. The church is the central pilgrimage shrine of the island of Korčula: on the feast of St. James on July 25th, there is a great ceremony here when the image of the Virgin Mary from the altar is carried in a votive procession that goes around the entire Čarsko polje, and is accompanied by a multitude of people from all over the island.
Čara is home to the cultural and artistic society Braća Krnomiri, named after the legendary brothers who once bravely fought for the rights of serfs against the Venetian nobility and prince. In the nearby southern bay of Zavalatica (2 km along a beautiful road) there is a series of family-run, modernly equipped guesthouses built right on the coast.
