Srednjodalmatinski otok Korčula pruža se usporedno s nedalekim kopnom smjerom zapad – istok. Dug je 46,8 km, prosječne širine 5,3 do 7,8 km, zaprema površinu od 270 km2 i po veličini je šesti otok na Jadranskom moru. Od poluotoka Pelješca dijeli ga Pelješki kanal, a među njima je najmanja udaljenost 1270 m. Otok Korčula je dobro razveden nizom zaljeva i uvala. Klima na otoku je vrlo blaga, mediteranskog obilježja. Srednje temperature su razmjerno visoke: godišnja je 16,8 stupnjeva C, u najhladnijem mjesecu siječnju 9,1 stupnjeva C, a najtoplijem srpnju 26,9 stupnjeva C.
Otok obiluje prirodnim ljepotama posebne privlačnosti, vrijednih da ih se posjeti i upozna. U blizini grada Korčule je arhipelag dvadesetak nenaseljenih otočića obraslih gustom makijom i pristupačne obale: na nekima su uz more glatke kamene ploče pogodne za sunčanje.Ovo tipično staro naselje vinograda s oko 600 žitelja udaljeno od Korčule cestom 25 km nalazi se uz glavnu otočnu prometnicu. Izgrađena je na južnoj padini brijega podno kojega se prostire veliko, plodno polje s vinogradima. Tu se uzgaja posebna vrsta grožđa Pošip. U mjestu je i vinarski podrum gdje se proizvodi istoimeno glasovito vino. U središtu naselja uz cestu stoji župna crkva sv. Petra iz 15. stoljeća višekratno pregrađena,a njezin zvonik je pregrađen osamdesetih godina 20. stoljeća.
Na malom popločenom trgu pred crkvom raste višestoljetni veliki čempres. Na glavnom oltaru crkve je slika Krist se pokazuje učenicima djelo istaknutog venecijanskog renesansnog slikara Jacopa Bassana s kraja 16. stoljeća. Kao i u ostalim naseljima otoka i ovdje u obližnjoj morskoj uvali Zavalatici bili su utvrđeni ljetnikovci korčulanskih posjednika i plemića. U polju sred vinograda je mjesno staro i novo groblje sa zavjetnom crkvom Gospe Čarskog polja iz 14. st. koja je sadašnji oblik dobila u baroku. Na njezinom oltaru je predela s reljefnim prizorima iz života Bogorodice. Te kasnogotičke alabasterne reljefe engleskog podrijetla, radionica Nothinghem iz 15. st. po tradiciji je u nedaleku uvalu Čavića luku naplovilo more, a postoji i legenda o njihovu čudesnom dolasku u Čaru. Crkva je središnje hodočasničko svetište otoka Korčule: na blagdan sv. Jakova 25. srpnja ovdje je velika svečanost kada se na zavjetnoj procesiji koja obilazi cijelo Čarsko polje nosi lik Bogorodice s oltara, a prati je mnoštvo puka s cijelog otoka.
U Čari djeluje kulturno umjetničko društvo Braća Krnomiri, ime je dobilo po legendarnoj braći koja su se nekada hrabro borila za prava kmetova protiv mletačkog plemstva i kneza. U obližnjoj južnoj uvali Zavalatici (2 km lijepom cestom) niz je obiteljsko suvremeno opremljenih pansiona izdignutih neposredno uz obalu.

The central Dalmatian island of Korčula stretches parallel to the nearby mainland in the west-east direction. It is 46.8 km long, with an average width of 5.3 to 7.8 km, covers an area of ​​270 km2 and is the sixth largest island in the Adriatic Sea. It is separated from the Pelješac peninsula by the Pelješac Channel, the shortest distance between them being 1270 m. The island of Korčula is well indented with a series of bays and coves. The climate on the island is very mild, Mediterranean in character. Average temperatures are relatively high: the annual average is 16.8 degrees C, in the coldest month of January it is 9.1 degrees C, and in the warmest month of July it is 26.9 degrees C. The island abounds in natural beauties of special appeal, worth visiting and getting to know. Near the town of Korčula is an archipelago of about twenty uninhabited islets covered with dense macchia and accessible coastlines: on some of them there are smooth stone slabs by the sea suitable for sunbathing. This typical old vineyard settlement with about 600 inhabitants, 25 km away from Korčula by road, is located along the main island road. It was built on the southern slope of a hill at the foot of which lies a large, fertile field with vineyards. A special type of grape, Pošip, is grown here. There is also a wine cellar in the village where the famous wine of the same name is produced. In the center of the village, along the road, stands the parish church of St. Peter from the 15th century, rebuilt several times, and its bell tower was rebuilt in the 1980s.
A large cypress tree, several centuries old, grows on the small paved square in front of the church. On the main altar of the church is the painting Christ Showing Himself to the Disciples, a work by the prominent Venetian Renaissance painter Jacopo Bassano from the end of the 16th century. As in other settlements on the island, here in the nearby sea bay of Zavalatica, the summer residences of Korčula landowners and nobles were fortified. In the field in the middle of the vineyards is the local old and new cemetery with the votive church of Our Lady of Čarsko Polje from the 14th century, which took its current form in the Baroque. On its altar is a relief with scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. These late Gothic alabaster reliefs of English origin, the Nottingham workshop from the 15th century, according to tradition, were washed up by the sea in the nearby Čavića Luka bay, and there is a legend about their miraculous arrival in Čara. The church is the central pilgrimage shrine of the island of Korčula: on the feast of St. James on July 25th, there is a great ceremony here when the image of the Virgin Mary from the altar is carried in a votive procession that goes around the entire Čarsko polje, and is accompanied by a multitude of people from all over the island.
Čara is home to the cultural and artistic society Braća Krnomiri, named after the legendary brothers who once bravely fought for the rights of serfs against the Venetian nobility and prince. In the nearby southern bay of Zavalatica (2 km along a beautiful road) there is a series of family-run, modernly equipped guesthouses built right on the coast.

Wie in anderen Siedlungen der Insel wurden auch hier in der nahegelegenen Meeresbucht Zavalatica die Sommerresidenzen der Grundbesitzer und Adligen von Korčula befestigt. Auf dem Feld inmitten der Weinberge befindet sich der örtliche alte und neue Friedhof mit der Votivkirche Unserer Lieben Frau von Čarsko Polje aus dem 14. Jahrhundert, die ihre heutige Form im Barock erhielt. Auf ihrem Altar befindet sich ein Relief mit Szenen aus dem Leben der Jungfrau Maria. Diese spätgotischen Alabasterreliefs englischen Ursprungs, der Nottingham-Werkstatt aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, wurden der Überlieferung nach vom Meer in die nahegelegene Bucht Čavića Luka gespült, und es gibt eine Legende über ihre wundersame Ankunft in Čara.
